Rabbits: Baby machines!

Did you know that rabbits can have offspring once they reach just five months old! If there is ample food, they can be pregnant 70% of the year and give birth to around 50 kittens annually (name for a baby rabbit)!!

Rabbits are the #1 pest in Otago. Originally introduced to NZ in the 1800s for meat and hunting, they quickly plagued the region. All around the shores of Lake Dunstan their impact on the local ecosystems and biodiversity is very apparent. Native plants have been stripped from the land and the soil is pocketed with holes.

Unfortunately there is no easy fix. For the best success, multiple methods are needed to remove and keep them away. These include: fencing, poisoning, shooting and viruses. to learn more about these methods, click on the link below.
