Since 2010 the Cromwell community has come together to clean and clear the shoreline of Lake Dunstan to ease access and make it a safer space to explore and play. By clearing the weeds and rubbish, we can make the shoreline more accessible for swimmers, picnickers, and boaties and encourage native plants to thrive.
2021 was the first year Lake Dunstan Charitable Trust coordinated this event after Janeen Wood was kind enough to pass it on. Janeen has dedicated herself to improving the environment and well-being of the local community over the years and is now busy creating cycle trails around the area; the Lake Dunstan cycle trail is her most recent achievement. LDCT is determined to create a happier and healthier environment for both wildlife and people so that we all have a place to explore, thrive and relax and this is just one of many efforts we will be undertaking.

13th Annual Lakeside Clean-up 2023
Lake Dunstan Charitable Trust is excited to share the fantastic success of the annual Lake Dunstan Clean-Up event, which once again showed just how powerful our community can be when we come together. On September 16th, 138 residents and local community group members rolled up their sleeves to restore the beauty of the shoreline, covering Richards Beach to McNulty Inlet.
Big thanks go out to those who made this event happen: Te Tapu o Tane for their great coordination, CODC for providing access to the transfer station, and Hirepool for generously lending us tools. We also want to give a shoutout to Lions, Ladies Lions, Old Cromwell Inc, Rotary, U14 Rugby, Scouts, Mohiki Reforestation Trust, Rowing, and Cromwell Primary for their active involvement. Your collective efforts showcased our tight-knit community.
This event is proof of what we can achieve when we all work towards a common goal. As we move forward, let's continue to work together to protect the natural beauty of Lake Dunstan and celebrate the unity that makes our community so special.

12th Annual Lakeside Clean-up 2022
This year we saw a massive community effort to improve safety and access to Lake Dunstan for the 12th Annual lakeside clean-up. On Wednesday 14th September, 40 students from Cromwell Primary helped to collect rubbish and weeds from along Alpha Street with the generous help of staff, parents and Robin Dicey. Then on Saturday 17th September, over 80 people came together to remove over 17 trailers of rubbish and weeds from between Richards Beach to McNulty Inlet. All in just 3 hours!
The trust wants to thank all the amazing community groups and individuals who donated their time to give back to their local community and environment. By removing hazardous waste and invasive willows and lupins, we can ensure access to the shoreline for recreation and wildlife is safe and maintained. We also want to thank the Presbyterian church and the Cromwell new commerce group for holding their own clean-ups.

11th Annual Lakeside Clean-up:
Saturday 18th September 2021
Despite level 2 restrictions, we had a fantastic turnout, with 65 people coming along and luckily it was amazing weather! Over the space of 3 hours, we worked to clear 5 km of shoreline to ease access to the water and make it a safer environment for people and animals.
Hard work and many hands allowed us to remove an amazing 15 trailers of weeds (mainly lupins) and 2 trailers of rubbish. Lupins thrive along shorelines, quickly cutting off access and creating unfavourable conditions for local species. Their removal means we now have easy access for swimmers, kayakers and pets wanting to take a dip! The rubbish is comprised of a variety of materials, including bottles, glass and metal which are a hazard to both animals and people. This clean-up has come at the right time, just before the school holidays, when there will be a lot of activity around the lake. It is now much safer for people to play, explore and relax. |
