Lake Dunstan Community Vision Report

Working with Shaping our Future to capture the community's opinions

Lake Dunstan Community Visioning Report 2022

Between January and July 2022, Shaping our Future (SoF) were contracted to undertake long term community visioning work for the Lake Dunstan Charitable Trust (LDCT). A combination of face to face and online engagement processes captured input from over 350 members of the pubic and built on the findings of a survey of over 250 people previously undertaken by the LDCT.

The findings of the engagement were distilled into 15 current-day issues, 15 value statements, and 15 descriptors of long-term success and these were then prioritised by 268 members of the public using the Ethelo engagement platform over a 4-week period. The results of the engagement and community priorities have been used to describe simple vision and values statements for Lake Dunstan and make 5 key recommendations as the first steps towards meeting the vision.

A word from us:

For the first time in Lake Dunstan's 30 year history, the community was asked to come together and share what they see for its future. Whether participants were interested in the transition of the Kawarau arm, development of the shoreline, local biodiversity or access to recreational activities, all were used to create written proof of the community's values, concerns and aspirations for the lake's future.

Thank you to everyone that completed the surveys and attended the online workshops. We had an amazing response from the local community, with over 350 providing feedback and hundreds of comments to provide the best written proof of how the community feels about the current and future conditions and use of Lake Dunstan.

This report will help not only our work to improve the lake and protect values, but also to help guide councils, stakeholders, community groups and anyone else wanting to advocate or undertake projects to create the lake the local community wants and deserves.

As part of our four-year Jobs for Nature project funded by Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) to improve areas of Lake Dunstan’s shoreline and discover the communities concerns and aspirations for its future, the Lake Dunstan Charitable Trust are thrilled to announce that Shaping our Future has been contracted to create a community vision for our extraordinary Lake Dunstan.

Who are Shaping our Future?

"We are an independent not-for-profit community visioning organisation. We use a process based on workshops, surveys and working groups to assist local communities to draw up long term aspirational visions. The key is that the vision comes from, and is owned by the community. The process captures todays’ issues and problems but focusses on what long term success looks like so that the first steps towards reaching the end goal can be identified."
