Freshwater pests such as Lagarosiphon major, Didymo and toxic algae can be devastating to native ecosystems and recreation if they find their way into water bodies.

Lagarosiphon: Skyrocketing to the surface!

Did you know:

A 10cm piece of Lagarosiphon can regrow to 2 metres in a little as 50-100 days!!

Around 500ha of the lake bed (1/5th of total lake) is suitable for Lagarosiphon and of that 139ha is currently used for recreational use. Lagarosiphon poses many threats to recreation activities, swimmers and biodiversity but is very costly and labour-intensive to manage and eradicate.

First day on the job for our new Community Engagement Coordinator, Megan. Welcome to the team!

Megan will be full time and based in the Connect Cromwell office during the week. she is looking forward to getting fully immersed into the community and seeing Lake Dunstan become the healthy and shared space the Cromwell community and wildlife deserves.

Its amazing to see the young people of the community wanting to tackle to issues of Lake Dunstan. With the increasing awareness of climate change and global biodiversity crisis, its great the kids are keen to tackle it head on. Strong minds are needed for change and these kids are pushing forward will all their power.

Shovels, weed-whackers and other gear is needed for an army of young volunteers keen to clean up Lake Dunstan’s shoreline.
