Year 7 Students clearing the Aquatic Centre Garden

11/25/2021

Today we helped a Year 7 class from Cromwell College clear weeds from the Aquatic Centre Garden as part of their project to improve the area to promote imagination, play and to support the lizards  within.
Although it was incredibly windy, the students cleared a whole trailer of prickly weeds and litter within an hour and made a massive difference!
We look forward to helping them improve the garden in the new year by planting native plants that provide food and shelter to the lizards and to make it a space for learning and imagination.

ODT: Concern About Water Park Move Consultation

11/17/2021

The relocation of the Kiwi Waterpark was approved by the Central Otago District Council in a variation to the original resource consent granted in 2020. With the lake being a public asset, we are disappointed the council did not seek to engage with the wider community during the decision process.

LDCT is committed to representing the communities around Lake Dunstan, and we encourage you to share your opinion with us by emailing community@lakedunstan.org.

Crack willow: The Beauty is a Beast of a weed!

11/11/2021

We all agree that Crack willow is a beautiful tree, especially this time of the year. Unfortunately, this beauty is a beast to control and eradicate.
The name comes from the branches & stem fragments easily 'cracking' off from the trees. These fragments move downstream and can easily resprout; as you can see from the pictures.
Crack willow threatens riparian habitats (and the flora and fauna found within), increases the risk of flooding and can cause blockages to the dam and around bridges.

Cromwell’s giant inflatable water park is set to take over a popular, sheltered swimming bay in Lowburn this summer.

A volunteer group of lake guardians is concerned a public asset has been lost to a private entity without consultation.

Lake Dunstan Charitable Trust chair Duncan Faulkner says the new location of the park has taken away free public access to a highly-used, sheltered bay.
“It is disappointing that the wider community was not engaged with on this decision.”
